International Day @ Foothill

Friday night was Foothill’s International Day event.  I wasn’t expecting the great booths and super turn out and was really surprised by how wonderful it all was.  It was the first year Foothill held the cultural fair at night.  The kids had passports to color  while they learned a little about various countries represented at our school.  Haley and I started at Russia/Romania.  Then we went to Korea, Japan, Italy, China/Taiwan, Ethiopia, India, and finally Sweden/Denmark.  The booths had some art, some yummies to taste, and some interesting things to look at.  Various countries also did a presentation on stage… like a dance, a game, a slide show, etc.  All in all, Haley and I left with our bellies full, our arms filled with crafts, and with smiles on our faces.  It was super seeing Adam, DK, Jinsu, Jolyn, and Grant at the event.

Fun in the Garden!

After weeding the garden space for 3/4ths of this school year, we’ve finally done some planting! Hooray! I’m working with all the fourth grade classes to do a little gardening and they sure do love it! I love that they love it and it’s a lot of fun to do, although we do have our challenges. With the generous grant we are given by the PTA, I was able to buy lots of seedlings for our garden, some good soil/compost, some seeds, mulch, snail and deer repellent, and some flowers. We spent a good chunk after the field trip on Thursday clearing out the weeds and a huge chunk on Friday getting everything planted and beautifying the garden. Since we couldn’t buy everything new, we scavenged the garden supply closet and found lots of usable fencing, tomato cages, and some random metal art, too! I hope in a few short weeks, the garden will be looking really amazing. I’m also hoping that it warms up a smidge so that we have some crops to enjoy before the last day of school. Thank you to Nicole, Jolyn, and Anika for helping out during their lunch period, too.  Oh, and pray that the deer don’t come and eat it all up!
